A political scientist will spend a lot of time looking at the rules that are used in a particular country and how they affect the decisions that are made. They will also look at the ways in which people interact with the system of politics and the different factors that influence it. They might also look at the history of the political system and how it has changed over time. In modern nations, people often form political parties to represent their ideas. The members of a party usually agree on a lot of things and they will try to work together so that they can have more power than other parties. They might agree to support the same changes to law or the same leaders. They will compete with other parties in elections. There are different kinds of politics, from the small family group (a clan or a band) up to nation states and even multinational corporations. Each of these systems has its own rules and different levels of power, although there are some basic principles that apply across the board. In most countries, the local councils take on a lot of the decision making, while the central government looks after bigger national issues such as taxation and foreign policy. The UK, for example, has devolved powers to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and to Greater Manchester – while the central government in Westminster takes control of other matters.
